Project Sydney: Green light to cutting red tape

RED tape is to be rapidly slashed in a bid to grow the state’s start-up scene and boost jobs, under ­a state government plan for Sydney to rival San Francisco as a top destination for entrepreneurs.

Innovation Minister Matt Kean has told The Daily Telegraph a new system will be implemented in which businesses can approach the government and find out within 24 hours whether the state is open to changing laws and regulation to accommodate their idea.

NSW Government strengthens loose-fill asbestos program

The NSW Government has strengthened the Loose-fill Asbestos Insulation Program to support more residents across the state, Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean announced today.

Free tests are now being offered in the Tamworth Regional Council area after a property was found to contain loose-fill asbestos.

In addition, properties affected by chrysotile loose-fill asbestos will also be included in the government's Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program.

More drivers than ever are saving money at the petrol pump, with the FuelCheck website hitting two million users overnight. 

Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, Matt Kean, said FuelCheck had become an important part of NSW drivers’ everyday lives. 

“With FuelCheck, we’ve made it easy to find the cheapest fuel in your suburb,” Mr Kean said. 

“Every day, around 13,000 users log onto FuelCheck to compare petrol prices and save money at the pump.”

Tamworth gets loose-fill asbestos free testing

HOUSES within the Tamworth Regional Council region can now get a free test for loose-fill asbestos, and if they test positive can be voluntarily sold to the state government.

The Minister for Better Regulation made the announcement with Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson on Friday.

Loose-fill asbestos was used in some houses during the 50s and 60s.

“We’re currently offering 250 free tests in Tamworth, with 137 homes having been registered and confirmed as eligible for testing, to date,” Mr Kean said.

One of the state’s most respected and longest-serving public servants, NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe, has announced his retirement.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said Mr Stowe would retire in July after more than 40 years’ continuous service to the NSW public, including almost three decades in the consumer affairs portfolio, under 18 different Ministers, and six years as Commissioner.

NSW threatens to end CPAs' legal liability protection

The NSW government is threatening to deregister the accountants' organisation CPA Australia based on legal advice that it is no longer functioning as a professional standards body because it competes with its own members.

In a decision that will shock certified practicing accountants across Australia, NSW Fair Trading Minister Matt Kean has been told by the NSW Crown Solicitor that he should not approve a new professional standards scheme for CPA Australia when the current one expires in October.
