Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter

Tribute to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter

13 March 2018

Mr MATT KEAN (Hornsby—Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation) (13:12): The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter is one of the most important community organisations in Hornsby. February marked three years of operation for the amazing organisation that has helped give a home to 231 women who came to the shelter when they had nowhere else to turn. Having grown up on the North Shore, Chief Executive Officer of Women's Community Shelters Annabelle Daniel saw a desperate need for a shelter in the Hornsby area.

Apron auction to help shelter

PREMIER Gladys Berejiklian and Hornsby MP Matt Kean joined the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter recently for the launch of The 2017 Apron Project.

Throughout the month of October, more than 100 original aprons created by 60 local and international artists, including Ken Done, are up for auction as part of the annual event.

Without government assistance, the shelter’s board president Sallianne McClelland said the organisation struggled to raise the $450,000 needed each year to operate the facility.

Dorothy and Dick Babb - Local Legends

Mr MATT KEAN ( Hornsby ) ( 22:09 ): Usually when people think of retirement they think of relaxing in the sun somewhere after a lifetime of hard work, but not Hornsby couple Dorothy and Dick Babb. Retired for 18 years and now in their seventies, Dorothy and Dick are busier than they ever were during their working lives. Mr and Mrs Babb were nominated for the Pride of Australia award for their decades of work with the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter. Dorothy was a schoolteacher and Dick was an executive with the Commonwealth Bank.
