Matt Kean awarded Save a Life Award

"Every year, we recognise people who helped save a life- whether they're members of the public, StJohn volunteers,or our colleagues from other emergency service organisations'' Sarah Lance, CEO, St John Ambulance (NSW).

Usally it is the Member for Hornsby Matt Kean MP who gives out the awards, but recently he was pleased to accept the 'Save a Life Award' from St John Ambulance.

The prestigous 'Save a Life' Award was awarded to Mr Kean after he administered first aid to a woman who collapsed at a community event.

The Hornsby Swim Club will now be able to offer electronic timing, thanks to a grant from Member for Hornsby Matt Kean MR

The club was awarded $3,000 to purchase the Colorado timing systemwhich is currently being implemented into Friday meets.

"Hornsby Swim Club has been working hard to increase their membership and they can now offer electronic timing for all races, "Mr Kean said.

Also awarded a sports grant o f S1,880 was Hornsby Touch Football Association. They have used the funds to provide accreditation for a number ofcoaches and referees.

Mental health boost for Regional NSW businesses

MENTAL HEALTH BOOST FOR REGIONAL NSW BUSINESSES

The Black Dog Institute has agreed to partner with the NSW Government in a program to provide mental health skills training to regionally-based workers.

Minister for Better Regulation, Matt Kean, said the training to employees and owner operators from small to medium-sized businesses would help build strategies and the capability to proactively manage their mental health and support others in the workplace.

Retirement village residents across NSW will save thousands of dollars and be able to transition into aged care more easily under new laws that will require villages to pay exit entitlements and stop charging fees sooner.

A “Building Commissioner” will have responsibility for auditing people who work in the industry, the NSW government says in its long-awaited response to a major review of regulation of the building and construction sector.

The government will also tighten protections for homeowners and owners’ corporations, to help ensure they receive compensation if builders or engineers have been negligent.

'One less problem': Domestic violence victims protected by rental law

Rental reforms allowing victims of domestic violence to immediately break their lease have been welcomed as "one less problem" for women looking to escape violent homes.

The reforms, part of a broader package of rental reforms passed by the NSW government in October last year, will come into effect on February 28.

"This is all about protecting victims. That means victims can quickly escape violent homes without worrying about extra penalties or repercussions," Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean said.

Tenants trapped in violent relationships will be protected by new renting reforms, which come into effect on 28 February 2019.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean announced the date which would allow victims of domestic violence to immediately end their tenancy without financial penalty.

“Domestic violence is a harrowing and traumatic ordeal, and victims shouldn’t be further punished when trying to escape,” Mr Kean said.

Death in water tank sparks warning to bosses

THE death of a man repairing a water tank at Dyraaba last August is one of several tragedies in NSW last year that sparked a warning about the dangers of working in a confined space.

Bosses are being urged to do more to protect employees as SafeWork NSW investigates a number of fatalities in 2018 involving working in confined spaces.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said: "Small spaces like silos, chimneys, tunnels and tanks are not designed to be worked in regularly, but sometimes they need to be accessed for cleaning, maintenance or repairs".

Sydney's Opal Tower 'structurally sound'

An engineering firm investigating Sydney's cracked Opal Tower has found the building is "structurally sound overall" but the cause of the cracks is still unknown.

WSP, one of the investigators being employed by the building company Icon, said on Monday investigators have accessed all key locations in the Sydney Olympic Park apartment tower and found the building is "structurally sound overall".
