I am speaking to you from the traditional lands of the Gu-ring-gai people. I acknowledge them and pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Can I remind everyone that the land on which we gather is, was and always will be aboriginal land.

First up, I’d like to acknowledge the impact that the COVID019 pandemic has had on the volunteers who are the lifeblood of the member organisations of the Nature Conservation Council.

I begin by acknowledging traditional owners and pay my respects to Elders, past, present and emerging.

I am incredibly glad to be here to launch the Climate of the Nation Report 2020 and I thank the Australia Institute for making sure the voices of everyday Australians are heard.

Now more than ever we are in need of evidence based policy and thought leadership. The Australia Institute continues to lead the way on both fronts playing a vital role in building a stronger, fairer and more sustainable Nation.

‘CRITICAL’ STATUS FOR BILLION-DOLLAR REGIONAL PUMPED HYDRO PROJECT

The billion-dollar Oven Mountain pumped hydro project has been declared Critical State Significant Infrastructure by the NSW Government, kick-starting the country’s largest Renewable Energy Zone and unlocking opportunities for 600 regional jobs.

Energy Minister Matt Kean said that pumped hydro was essential for the State’s energy future and works by pumping water up the hill when energy is cheap and letting it run down the hill when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.

Social housing tenants are enjoying significant relief of up to $1000 off their home energy bills thanks to targeted NSW Government programs to install solar panels on properties throughout regional NSW.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey, said 689 Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) homes on the NSW Mid-North Coast and 272 Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) homes in the Riverina region would be upgraded with solar panels in the coming months.

New chair for State's Environment Watchdog

NEW CHAIR FOR STATE’S ENVIRONMENTAL WATCHDOG

Former Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) senior executive Rayne de Gruchy AM PSM has been appointed Chair of the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Environment Minister Matt Kean said Ms de Gruchy is a highly experienced regulator and will play a key role in ensuring that the EPA is a world-class regulator that holds dodgy individuals and organisations to account.

Bilbies return to Sturt after 100 year absence

BILBIES RETURN TO STURT AFTER 100 YEAR ABSENCE

NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean has today announced the successful reintroduction of the bilby, into a large cat and fox-free area, at Sturt National Park more than a century since they were declared extinct in NSW.

Mr Kean said the bilbies, part of a new breeding program at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, will begin the process of returning the area to what it was before feral animals wreaked havoc on our native animals.
