Protection for Koala Population

28 August 2020

I was pleased to announce that we will create a new National Park in South West Sydney to protect NSW’s last disease free Koala population forever. We will spend $84m to purchase private land to create a continuous link between Kentlyn and Dharawal national park, install 120km of safety fencing and revegetate essential corridors by planting over 100,000 feed trees. This is about ensuring our kids and their kids will be able to see koalas in the wild.

I joined Premier Gladys Berejiklian, as well as Nathaniel Smith and Wendy Tuckerman for the gazettal of Guula Ngurra National Park in the beautiful southern highlands. Featuring critical koala habitat, so important to the longevity of Australia’s most loved native animal and part of my commitment to expand our national parks estate by 200,000 hectares within two years, which we will exceed in one year, thanks to today’s announcement.

Important koala habitat is to be protected for future generations with the creation of the new Guula Ngurra National Park in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the creation of this national park delivers on a commitment from the 2019 election and is an important step to securing the future of koalas in the wild.

“Koalas are an iconic Australian animal and national parks like this protect their habitat for future generations,” Ms Berejiklian said.

AFR: Matt Kean's journey from PwC accountant to electrifying Liberal

Minister Kean Photo By Peter Braig

Berowra Waters Inn is a day in the country, a water-access-only foodie’s paradise sited in dense bushland just an hour north of Sydney’s centre. At least, that’s how it used to be. The Glenn Murcutt-designed, glass-walled 1980s icon was considered among Australia’s most expensive and cutting-edge restaurants, the place for those raking it in when greed was good.

Minister Kean speaks to Kieran Gilbert on Sky News

27 July 2020

New South Wales Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean has called on the federal government to implement a so-called “green cop” to monitor national environment laws.

This comes after a review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act called for a federal independent regulator. However, the recommendation was rejected by federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley.

“The elevated boardwalk will improve visitor access to the spectacular nature reserve while also benefiting the island’s most important habitants – the muttonbirds,” Mr Kean said.

The NSW Government has acquired an additional 89 hectares of land to expand Cudgen Nature Reserve and aid the recovery of the Tweed koala population.
