FAIRER GIFT CARD TERMS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

This is the first year Christmas shoppers will benefit from minimum three year expiry dates on gift cards, after the NSW Government’s nation-leading reforms commenced in March.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said in previous years, the majority of gift cards only offered a 12 month expiry date.

“Gift cards are a popular present for people who are hard to buy for,” Mr Kean said.

“And since the NSW Government introduced these Australia-first reforms, consumers now have three years to use them.

A COMPLAINT from a fedup Mt Colah resident resulted in a major shake-up of the gift card industry and a legislation change that supports consumers.

Gabrielle Smith wrote to Hornsby state Liberal MP and Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean about expiration dates of gift cards after she was left with several cards expiring before use.

“My husband found an expired Gold Class card in the bottom of his draw,’’ Mrs Smith said. “We thought we would inquire and the business said they could not help us because they were out-ofdate.’’

Tough new 'consumers first' laws pass parliament

TOUGH NEW ‘CONSUMERS FIRST’ LAWS PASS PARLIAMENT

Tough new laws that put consumers first by giving them a fairer deal on gift cards and stamping out dodgy ticket scalpers have passed the NSW Parliament today.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said the amendments to the Fair Trading Act 1987 would crack down on price gouging in the sports and live entertainment industries.

“These Australian-first laws will stop the ‘bots’ by outlawing security manipulation software that allows ticket scalpers to sweep up tickets in mass quantities,” Mr Kean said.
