Child window safety locks now mandatory in NSW

Laws designed to enhance child safety come into force across NSW today, with window locks now mandatory on strata buildings, Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said.

“From today, strata building windows from which a child could fall two metres or more must have child-proof locks,” Mr Kean said.

Mr Kean said property owners and owners’ corporations have had plenty of time to install window locks to ensure their building complies with the law.

Minister Kean warns against dangerous Christmas decorations

If you're decorating your house and a Christmas tree this year, beware of dodgy products on the market.

Fair Trading has been inspecting stores for dangerous decorations, and they've discovered some that could electrocute you or set your house alight.

Their inspectors are on the warpath, calling on hundreds of retailers, checking Christmas lights, decorations, electrical wiring and plugs.

And they've uncovered some imported hazards.

Made from highly flammable artificial plants, this Christmas candleholder could burn your house down.

A DANGEROUS, banned novelty product which could kill or injure children has been ordered off the shelves in Ballina, Minister for Fair Trading Matt Kean said today.

Mr Kean said NSW Fair Trading inspectors had identified the item - a toy-like novelty cigarette lighter - during a pre-Christmas safety blitz.

This year's pre-Christmas blitz saw NSW Fair Trading inspectors visit 903 businesses across NSW and inspect 10,727 individual products, with a focus on toys aimed at small children, aquatic toys and projectiles. Forty-one items were ordered to be withdrawn from sale.
