Zero Extinctions Target Set for NSW National Parks

ZERO EXTINCTIONS TARGET SET FOR NSW NATIONAL PARKS

Koalas, rock wallabies and the Nightcap Oak are some of the iconic species set to be protected under an historic National Parks plan to declare 221 sites as Assets of Intergenerational Significance (AIS) and set a target of zero extinctions of species on the NSW National Park estate.

Environment Minister Matt Kean said the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Threatened Species Framework was about protecting and improving the health of our threatened and iconic species for future generations.

21 December 2020

Today I joined Gladys Berejiklian and Adam Marshall to hand back more than 15,000 hectares of land in the State’s central west to Aboriginal owners, which will be reserved to form the new Mt Grenfell National Park and Mt Grenfell State Conservation Area.

National Park Estate Target Doubled

NATIONAL PARK ESTATE TARGET DOUBLED

More than 270,000 hectares has been added to the NSW national park estate, smashing the State’s target to increase the footprint by 200,000 hectares by 2021.

Environment Minister Matt Kean said the new additions – totaling 202,669 hectares – are the largest increase to national parks in a single day since 2005.

“Permanently reserving national parks is the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation in NSW,” Mr Kean said.

Largest ever purchase for National Parks Estate

01 July 2020

I was pleased to announce the NSW Government have made the biggest ever acquisition of private land into the National Parks portfolio of NSW with the purchase of Narriearra Station in far north-west NSW. Narriearra spans 153,415 hectares of the outback Channel Country and includes part of the Bulloo River Floodplain, ephemeral wetlands and landscapes currently not found anywhere in NSW’s National Parks and is also a refuge for threatened wildlife, with at least 27 threatened animal species found within the station.

LARGEST EVER PURCHASE FOR NATIONAL PARK ESTATE

The 153,415 hectare Narriearra Station in far north west NSW is the largest purchase of private land for national parks in the State’s history.

Environment Minister Matt Kean says the purchase will help protect threatened species, important habitat and wetlands.

“Narriearra Station stretches across the outback Channel Country and includes part of the Bulloo River floodplain, ephemeral wetlands and landscapes currently not found anywhere in NSW national parks,” Mr Kean said.

11 June 2020

This June long weekend, I’m encouraging all NSW locals to get out and about and visit their favourite national park and regional destinations no matter whether it’s for a night in one of our 200+ campgrounds which are now bookable online, or just to enjoy the great outdoors. Be sure to keep your distance, complete the NPWS trip intention form and look after our natural wonders.
