Lottery scheme option to prevent dodgy building certifications

Property developers could be made to find building certifiers through a lottery system where three are chosen at random, under a proposal aimed at removing conflicts of interest in the construction industry in NSW.

An options paper to be released today by the state government has proposed three ways to remove “dodgy” deals between major developers and certifiers who have, in some rare cases, given buildings the all-clear before they are ready.

“It is ridiculous that developers can choose their own certifiers,” Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean said.

An online dog food supplier has featured on the latest NSW Fair Trading Complaints Register, with a mixed bag of other companies appearing on the list.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said online pet supplies retailer dogfood.com.au received 10 complaints from pet owners who were dissatisfied in their dealings with the trader.

“The August Complaints Register should give shonky retailers a well-deserved shock, and encourage them to lift their game,” Mr Kean said.

DENILIQUIN COMPANY FINED $300K OVER WORKER DEATH

A Deniliquin-based tyre and wheel fitting company has been fined $300,000 after a 49 year old worker was killed when changing a wheel on an industrial vehicle.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said Haconby Pty Ltd was sentenced in the Sydney District Court for failing to ensure correct safety procedures were followed, and failing to properly train its staff to carry out the work.

Watchdog gives chase after customers get no joy from Android Enjoyed

NSW Fair Trading is taking action against Android Enjoyed in the NSW Supreme Court after hundreds of consumer complaints and after the retailer topped the complaints register five times.

Android Enjoyed is a Hong Kong-based e-commerce business that sells electronic goods, including mobile phones, tablets and cameras.

NSW Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said Fair Trading had started injunction proceedings against Android Enjoyed's parent company Digital Marketing and Solutions Pty Ltd and its director Yuen Ho Wong.
