A crack down on dangerous cladding is seeing it removed from buildings in NSW.

Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Matt Kean told Nine News my number priority is ensuring every person living in a building with cladding is safe.

The NSW Government has successfully called for a national report to examine who is liable for having unsafe cladding rectified on buildings, Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said. 

State and Territory Building Ministers and the Commonwealth agreed to initiate the report at the Building Ministers’ Forum, held in Melbourne today.

“NSW is leading the nation to address the issue of who should pay for rectification work, if it’s required, and what existing remedies are in place for affected building owners,” Mr Kean said.

The NSW government is "disappointed" the commonwealth won't ban the importation of flammable cladding of the type involved in London's Grenfell Tower disaster.

The federal opposition wants polyethylene cladding banned but assistant industry minister Craig Laundy says the product is also made in Australia "so a ban at the border would do nothing about those companies".

Mr Laundry met with his state and territory counterparts in Brisbane on Friday.

The NSW government will be contacting property owners after discovering 1000 buildings potentially contain highly flammable cladding.

Better Regulations Minister Matt Kean on Friday announced a 10-point plan that will force property owners to pay for inspections, as well as new laws to crack down on those who sign off on dodgy building materials.
