The NSW Government has released an awareness campaign to remind DIY enthusiasts to plan, prepare and check for asbestos if they are renovating an old home.

Renovation works may disturb asbestos, particularly in houses and sheds built before 1990, and the tagline Asbestos lurks in more places than you think, reminds DIY renovators and tradies to check for asbestos before renovating or building.

Environment Minister Matt Kean said this long weekend provides an ideal opportunity to tackle a DIY project but only if it is done safely and carefully.

Hunter home owners register for asbestos inspection

Thousands of Hunter home owners have registered for asbestos inspections as part of the State Government's Loose Fill Asbestos task force.

Almost 7000 Hunter residents have registered for inspections of their roof insulation over the past two months following the discovery of deadly loose-fill asbestos at a Lake Macquarie home.

The State Government’s offer to conduct free asbestos checks closed on Friday with 6931 people registering. The majority of those came from the Newcastle (2463) and Lake Macquarie (2356) local government areas.

Blue Mountains Council could face suspension over asbestos claims

BLUE Mountains Council is facing suspension over claims of a number of asbestos breaches — including at a preschool and library.

NSW Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton has today issued the council a notice of intention to suspend it and have an interim administrator based on “serious allegations”.

Asbestos has been allegedly found at a number of sites including Lawson Library, Warrimoo Citizens’ Hall, Heatherbrae Cottage at Lawson and council’s Lawson and Katoomba depots.

Blue Mountains council facing suspension over alleged asbestos breaches

The Blue Mountains council is facing suspension by the NSW government over alleged serious asbestos breaches, after the substance was discovered at a number of council-owned sites including two pre-schools and a library.

Local government minister Gabrielle Upton issued the council with a formal notice of "intention to suspend" on Wednesday in relation to its asbestos management practices.

The Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Matt Kean MP visits Holbrook and confirms they require special attention under the Loose-fill Asbestos Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program. 33 Holbrook homes have tested positive and the Minister is looking at pooling funds to help assist those residents with relocation costs.
