A long awaited report into the NSW RSL has found the former president Don Rowe had taken the institution to the brink of destruction and had engaged in "shameful and disgraceful conduct."
The inquiry headed by Judge Patricia Bergin found Mr Rowe had spent $475,000 on his RSL credit card. The money went on Rowe's mortgage, meals and mobile phone costs for his family.
Evidence was given that Rowe also allowed his son to stay in a four-star suite in the city with the bill picked up by the RSL.
Rowe's activities have been referred to the NSW police for further investigation.
The NSW Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said Rowe "used the RSL as his personal plaything."
Justice Bergen was scathing of those in the organisation who covered up the expenses rort. A total of 21 current and former RSL councillors have been referred to the charities watchdog.
