Commemorating 1944 Brooklyn Tragedy

State Member for Hornsby, Matt Kean MP, today joined families, Brooklyn residents and RailCorp staff to unveil a plaque in commemoration of the 16 lives that were lost on 20 January 1944, when a bus was hit by a mail train at the level crossing in Brooklyn.

Speaking at the commemoration service, held at the level crossing located near Brooklyn Station, Mr Kean recognised the lives that were lost on that tragic day and paid tribute to the residents who assisted in the recovery efforts.

'Today's plaque unveiling is about recognising and respecting the lives that were tragically lost on 20 January 1944', Mr Kean said.

'16 innocent residents lost their lives in this accident, five of whom were children. Nothing can bring back the lives that were lost, but today's plaque will ensure they are remembered'

'Today is also about remembering and acknowledging the countless residents who dedicated their energy and time to assist in the recovery efforts. Their fortitude and courage has been transcended to successive generations for the betterment of the community'.
