Mental Health Services at Hornsby Boosted

The Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner, and the Member for Hornsby, Matt Kean, today announced that construction will soon begin on the new mental health inpatient and community facilities at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.

"This $36 million project will enhance existing adult inpatient mental health services and create much needed child and adolescent inpatient services," Mrs Skinner said.

"The project will also include enhanced community mental health facilities for local children and adolescents."

The Member for Hornsby, Matt Kean, said both local and nearby health districts will benefit from the new facilities.

"The adult inpatient unit will cater for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai population primarily, and the inpatient child and adolescent facility will be accessible to clients in the Northern Sydney and Central Coast Local Health Districts," Mr Kean said.

"Mental health is an issue I'm incredibly passionate about so it is great to see the Minister for Health delivering much-needed services in this area."

Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd has been awarded the construction tender for the new child, adolescent and adult mental health facility.

The Minister for Mental Health, Kevin Humphries, said the new building will provide a 35-bed adult acute mental health inpatient unit to replace the existing 25-bed Lindsay Madew adult inpatient unit. "The new building will house a 12-bed child and adolescent mental health inpatient unit as well as an adjacent child and adolescent community mental health service," Mr Humphries said.

"Therapy rooms, family meeting rooms, a gym and courtyard for exercise and more than

150 car parking spaces will ensure the best possible mental health care for local residents."

Mrs Skinner said the multi-million dollar redevelopment ensures members of the Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai community and the Northern and Central Coast Local Health Districts as well as children and adolescents will have access to inpatient care.

The new mental health facility is expected to be completed in late 2013.
