VIAGOGO: Government warns against buying tickets from online re-sale site

Government warns about ticket re-seller website Viagogo

IT’S the ticket reselling site where music and sports fans head in the desperate hope of being given a second chance to attend a sold-out event.

But after thousands of complaints across the globe, a referral to the Australian consumer watchdog and eight appearances on the Fair Trading complaints register, the state government is taking the rare step of issuing a public warning against Geneva-based Viagogo.

Innovation and Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean will today issue a formal edict warning against consumers doing trade with the second-hand ticket seller.

It is understood NSW is not alone, with other states looking to follow suit.

The move follows artists and venue-operators themselves chastising the site for ripping off fans by selling tickets at grossly inflated prices or ones that do not even exist.

So far this year NSW Fair Trading has received 187 consumer complaints, and 237 enquiries, about the company.

It estimates around 600 consumers have been ripped off at a cost of $130,000.
