Fireworks are not toys and can be dangerous

The NSW Government has issued warnings about the buying, selling and handling of fireworks in the lead up to New Year’s celebrations.

Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean said on Thursday that SafeWork NSW has seized almost 150 kilos of fireworks in the lead up to New Year’s celebrations.

Mr Kean said the fireworks were seized from a northern Sydney property after a tip-off, with initial inquiries suggesting they were going to be sold or used illegally.

“Fireworks are regulated under explosives laws, and SafeWork NSW is responsible for issuing licences allowing their purchase, use, storage, manufacture, supply and transport,” Mr Kean said.

To date, SafeWork NSW has received 211 firework display notifications for a number of community events and other functions over the Christmas/New Year period, and has been conducting compliance checks in recent weeks to ensure community safety.

Mr Kean said the fireworks seized from northern Sydney are now being stored safely while SafeWork investigates.

“However, it serves as a timely warning for anyone using fireworks – these items are not toys. In the wrong hands they can be very dangerous and capable of causing horrific injuries, including burns, loss of limbs, or even death,” Mr Kean said.

“Tragically, a 52-year-old man lost his life on the Central Coast last New Year’s Eve after he was hit in the head by an illegal firework. That’s why fireworks should only be set off by trained and licensed individuals who know how to manage the risks and ensure everyone’s safety.

“We want New Year’s Eve to be memorable for all the right reasons – not because a loved one was maimed through the illegal use of fireworks.”

Mr Kean said anyone caught selling, purchasing, or letting off fireworks without a licence could face a fine of up to $27,500 and 12 months in jail.

SafeWork’s surveillance program will continue over the summer. The agency also works closely with NSW Police to target individuals attempting to sell illegal fireworks on social media.

“My message is simple: if you’re thinking about buying or selling illegal fireworks this summer, you will be caught and you will face significant penalties.”
