Australian Ministers have backed NSW calls to put consumers first and introduce a national five-star safety rating system for quad bikes.
The move comes as consumer affairs Ministers from across Australia and New Zealand met in Melbourne yesterday, for the Legislative and Government Forum on Consumer Affairs (CAF).
Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said the Ministers agreed to support all necessary steps to expedite the regulatory impact assessment processes, to introduce the rating system and associated safety standards.
“After recently calling for a national five-star safety rating system, I’m very pleased that my consumer affairs colleagues have thrown their support behind the scheme,” Mr Kean said.
“This a significant step forward in helping to reduce deaths and injuries from quad bike incidents, not just in NSW, but across the country.”
Mr Kean said the NSW Government would continue to work with the commonwealth, manufacturers and farmers to develop the system.
“The proposed rating system is aimed at giving consumers all the information they need to make the safest possible choice when buying a quad bike,” he said.
“This is about putting consumers first and doing everything we can to keep farmers safe at work.”
