Knox Grammar hosts Ku-ring-gai Youth Forum to tackle stigma surrounding mental illness

STUDENTS from 28 schools gained a better understanding of mental health issues affecting youth at a forum at Wahroonga last week.

Organised by Hornsby state Liberal MP Matt Kean and the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Youth Network, it was the biggest forum of its type ever held on the North Shore

More than 370 students and 40 teachers attended the event, hosted by Knox Grammar.

Ku-ring-gai Youth Development Service manager David Citer, who was part of the question-and-answer panel, said it was an inspirational day.

"As a community, we need to do whatever we can to destigmatise mental illness," Mr Citer said.

Knox student Ashley Kwok, 16, said the forum was eye opening.

"I think what really challenged me was what in society really matters and how we can make mental illness and mental health an accepted thing," he said.

Fellow Knox student Alex Cole, 16, said it had given him strategies on how to help friends who were struggling with mental health.
