Bus Opal Cards go live in Hornsby

Hornsby State Liberal MP Matt Kean today announced Opal electronic ticketing is now live on local buses in the Hornsby area.

"From today customers can use their Opal card on 24 bus routes in the area," Mr Kean said.

"Opal is already available on all trains and ferries and now I am pleased to announce that this is the first area to have all local buses Opal activated.

"Customers catching bus services on all routes between 556 and 599 can now access all the benefits of the Opal card including daily travel caps and free travel on any mode of public transport after eight paid journeys a week.

"Opal means cheaper fares for the vast majority of customers and means the ease and convenience of never having to queue for a ticket.

An Opal bus customer catching the 596 from Hornsby Station to Somerville Rd, Hornsby Heights will only pay $3.50 for a single adult fare compared to a MyBus $3.70 fare. With the Weekly Travel Reward a customer would pay only $28.00 a week compared to a TravelTen bus fare of $29.60.

"By setting your card to auto-top-up, customers can link their Opal to their debit or credit card and it will automatically top up when your balance gets low - like an e-tag," Mr Kean said.

"The NSW Government is getting on with the job of improving journeys for public transport customers.

"I encourage locals to register now for their Opal card.

"Customers can also register for a new Child/Youth Opal card, which works in the same easy and convenient way as the Adult Opal card, with child fares at 50 per cent of an adult fare."

Opal customers may want to look at the new Transport for NSW Opal smartphone cases.

"Because so many customers use their smartphone when travelling this range of phone cases, which hold the Opal card as well as the phone, mean convenient access to the public transport network will always be within arm's reach.

As well as bus routes in Hornsby and Mt Kuring-gai, Opal is now accepted on all Sydney Ferries services, all 308 stations on the Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink intercity networks and the 333 bus route from Circular Quay to North Bondi.
