Relay For Life Raises Vital Funds For Cancer Research

2012 proved to be another successful year for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Relay for Life, who held their annual relay event today.

The event, which was held at Rofe Park in Hornsby Heights and attended by over 1000 residents, was one of 23 organised by Cancer Council NSW to raise vital funds for the organisation's projects and services.

A community based relay event, Relay for Life is aimed at uniting the community to support those who are affected by cancer and to celebrate survivors.

According to Cancer Council Australia, approximately one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. In addition, the Cancer Institute NSW, a NSW Government funded cancer control agency indicates that more than 4000 people in the Northern Sydney Local Health District are diagnosed with cancer each year.

$147,000 was raised on the day that will enable Cancer Council NSW to undertake much needed research and support local initiatives.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, State Member for Hornsby, Matt Kean MP, spoke of the importance of the event.

'The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Relay for Life is a fantastic community event which raises vital funds for those living with cancer', Mr Kean said.

'I'd like to thank the event organisers who, under the leadership of Peter Bright, made the day a wonderful success'.
