MARK Taylor Oval at Waitara will remain the home of cricket in Hornsby and attract the best women’s matches after a plan to relocate to Hornsby Quarry was dismissed.

Northern District Cricket Club is in discussions with Hornsby Council and Hornsby state Liberal MP Matt Kean to upgrade the ground, commonly known as Waitara Oval.

Mr Kean said the club approached him and the council to consider moving to the quarry last year.

The Westleigh water board site was also deemed unsuitable for the club, which then requested its facilities be upgraded in its existing spot.

Funds have not been confirmed for an upgrade.

Mr Kean said the ground could also host women’s Test matches.

“Mark Taylor Oval should be a significant sporting facility for our entire region and I’m supportive of the club to make it a destination for cricket, particularly international female cricket matches,” he said.

“Northern District is an iconic Australian cricket club. It’s produced some of our best cricketers, including Mark Taylor and Neil Harvey. We want that legend to continue but it can only happen if the club has the best facilities.”
