Ticket scalping, rogue retirement villages and dodgy building certification in Matt Kean’s sights

THE State Government is preparing to tear up the business model of ticket scalpers who use computers to buy up the best seats at events purely to resell them for profit.

The intention to move against resale sites and so-called “bots” will be outlined by Fair Trading Minister Matt Kean today in a speech built around the rallying cry “consumers first”.

In the speech to department staff at Parramatta he will also urge them to help him restore public confidence shaken by revelations about rogue retirement villages and bodgy building certification.

“We need to address these problems because it is fair, because consumers should be safe, and because consumers should not be taken advantage of,” Mr Kean’s speech notes, seen by The Daily Telegraph, say.

“Concerns that building certifiers are beholden to developers have undermined the public’s confidence that homeowners are put first.
