NSW workplaces are aiming to be the safest in the country after the Liberal National Government committed to ambitious new targets in a refreshed Work Health and Safety Roadmap.
Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said the plan sought to reduce work-related deaths by 30 per cent, as well as injuries and illnesses by 50 per cent within five years.
“This isn’t just about numbers though. This is about people - and we’re doing everything we can to ensure they return home to their families after work each day,” Mr Kean said.
“NSW has already met and exceeded the national targets, and workplace-related deaths have fallen by about 25 per cent since our first year in government.
“While that is a good outcome and good for families, even one death or injury is too many and that’s why we are refreshing the roadmap.
“With NSW in the middle of the biggest road and rail construction boom in the country’s history we need to continue to focus on keeping our workers safe.”
Some of the initiatives already launched by the Liberal National Government include a $55 million Mentally Healthy Workplaces Strategy, increasing funding to the $3.7 million Quad Bike Safety Program, creating a $3.2 million workplace safety awareness campaign and enhancing laws for working with hazardous chemicals.
“We have the programs and resources in place to continue the good progress we’ve already made, and to reach these targets, which are the most ambitious in Australia.
“I am confident that with the support of business, industry and workers, and with this refreshed roadmap, we can do even more to improve safety in the workplace.”
