Consumers are at the heart of a new plan announced today by the NSW Government.
Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said Consumers First was a package of reforms and initiatives that would put everyday people front and centre.
“Whether it’s dodgy real estate agents or reckless retirement village operators, I’ve had enough of consumers being taken for a ride,” Mr Kean said.
“It’s time to put consumers first and this package will do just that.”
Mr Kean said he wanted consumers to be confident that they could pursue their rights without feeling like it was a waste of time and money.
“Consumers often lose out at the hands of people looking to make a quick buck,” he said.
“Consumers have had enough of profit gougers who use computers to buy tickets to concerts and sporting events, shop owners who provide a bad product or service, and they are concerned that there are building certifiers who are beholden to property developers.
“Many of these issues cause major headaches and financial distress and that’s something we have to stop.
“This program will look to address these problems and more.
“I look forward to setting out the details of the Consumers First package in the coming months.”
Mr Kean made the announcement at a farewell for Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe, who is retiring after 6 years in the position.
“NSW Fair Trading does an excellent job advocating for consumers, but we want to take it to the next level. Putting consumers first is the way that we will achieve this,” he said.
