Hornsby State Liberal MP Matt Kean today welcomed the medical graduates who are commencing their internships at Hornsby Kuring-gai Hospital this year.

Mr Kean said a record 980 interns will commence their medical internships in the state's public hospitals this year.

"I welcome the interns who have travelled from both near and far to undertake further medical training here at Hornsby Hospital," Mr Kean said.

"It is thrilling for these doctors-in-training to now have the opportunity to put into practice what they've learned. An internship at a local public hospital will provide them with great experience working alongside the many dedicated hospital staff who serve our community."

"The commitment to quality care demonstrated by those at Hornsby Hospital is known throughout the local community and I'm pleased to see these interns learning from some of our best."

Mr Kean said NSW employs more interns than any other state or territory in Australia with 980 intern training places available - an increase of 21 positions on last year. The NSW Government has committed more than $107 million this year to support intern training.

NSW guarantees intern positions to all domestic medical graduates of NSW universities. As well, NSW provides internships to many graduates from interstate universities and, where possible, international full-fee paying medical graduates.

During their one-year internship, the graduates will complete compulsory terms in the specialties of medicine, surgery and emergency.

The interns will rotate through metropolitan, regional or rural hospitals, as well as GP practices and, for one network, a private hospital - the Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAN) at Wahroonga.

"The intern training can be professionally and personally challenging but it is critical in ensuring patients across the state continue to be provided with quality and specialised health care for years to come.

"I wish these interns all the best as they continue on this exciting journey. I join the community in welcoming them to our beautiful local area and wish them all the best in their training," Mr Kean said.

Mr Kean said the first day of an internship is an unforgettable milestone in the life of every young doctor.

"I congratulate each of you for having come this far in your journey and I share your excitement as you get down to work."
