Hornsby locals to get My Place advice at their place

NSW Fair Trading’s My Place roadshow is coming to Hornsby

NSW Fair Trading’s My Place roadshow will help educate local consumers, traders, licensees, landlords, and residents when the program visits Hornsby next week.

Launched in 2003 as the Regional Access Program, My Place helps consumers understand their rights while simultaneously ensuring businesses are aware of their responsibilities as traders.

Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation and Member for Hornsby, Matt Kean, said the program would include an information session for Woniora Retirement Village residents to help raise awareness of costly scams.

“More than $89 million is lost each year to scammers in Australia and this seminar will give important and helpful advice on current scams while highlighting tell-tale signs and how to avoid them,” Mr Kean said.

“Scammers use many different techniques to steal your personal or banking details. They can be based online or through a call centre, be an itinerant and unlicensed tradesperson, or another form of con artist.

“I will always be on the side of consumers to ensure they’re getting a fair go and My Place delivers practical advice to achieve this,” Mr Kean said.

“At the same time I want businesses to know their responsibilities and ensure they’re doing the right thing, and to go after those who are not.”

My Place is currently visiting 12 suburbs across NSW over the next 8 months. Other sessions in Hornsby next week will provide information about acquiring services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), seminars for real estate agents, motor dealers and motor vehicle repairers, and a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) information seminar for builders.

Residents are encouraged to register their attendance for the public sessions prior to the event, as spaces are limited.
