Hornsby Footbridge to be Replaced

Hornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell and Hornsby MP Matt Kean this morning inspected the Hornsby Station footbridge that will soon be replaced, thanks largely to money from the State Government.

"This bridge is well past its used by date and we're very grateful to the State Government for their assistance in replacing it," Mayor Russell said.

"We're especially grateful to Matt Kean, who was instrumental in securing the funding."

Hornsby State Liberal MP Matt Kean said the footbridge funding was a great example of what can be achieved when different levels of Government work together.

"I'm thrilled that together the State Government and Hornsby Council have been able to commit to delivering this much needed upgrade for Hornsby commuters and local residents," Mr Kean said.

The project is expected to cost around $7 million, with the State Government providing two thirds of the amount and Council paying the rest.

The new bridge will be significantly wider and will include two lifts to provide access for those with mobility issues.

The project will also include significant improvements to the Florence Street Mall.

Construction is expected to begin soon and the new bridge will open early next year.

Throughout construction the existing bridge will remain open, providing ongoing access to pedestrians.

"This is not just about access to Hornsby Station, this bridge is instrumental in linking the two halves of Hornsby together and creating a single community," Mayor Russell said.

"Around 15,000 people use the bridge each day and they are all looking forward to this essential infrastructure upgrade."
