Hornsby Courthouse to Receive $1.5 Million Renovation

Hornsby State Liberal MP Matt Kean joined NSW Attorney General Brad Hazzard today to announce a $1.5 million upgrade for Hornsby Courthouse which will see facilities improved for people with a disability and victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Mr Kean toured the courthouse with Mr Hazzard to inspect plans for the upgrade which is set to begin in June.

The plans include a new registry that will make services faster and easier to access.

"The new registry will include information boards and a computer kiosk, where people will be able to browse legal resources online," Mr Kean said

"The registry will also have a split-level counter so that it is accessible to people using a wheelchair and there will be a separate room for lengthy or private enquiries."

Mr Kean said the renovation would enable people with a disability to move through the courthouse with dignity.

"The installation of ramps, platform lifts and railing is crucial to ensuring that the justice system is accessible to all members of our community," Mr Kean said.

Vulnerable witnesses, including children and victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, will be provided with a larger safe room.

"Equipped with a kitchenette, the safe room will provide a comfortable and secure place for vulnerable witnesses to prepare for their matter in court," Mr Kean said.

The main courthouse waiting area will also be made more comfortable and fire safety facilities will be improved.

From June 2, all Hornsby Local Court matters will be transferred to other Sydney courts, with the majority of cases to be heard at North Sydney Courthouse.

Hornsby Courthouse is due to reopen in January 2015.
