Deal on Hornsby's Quarry: Creating the People's Park

Member for Hornsby Matt Kean today announced a re-elected Baird Government would transform the Hornsby Quarry into 40 hectare parkland oasis.

Mr Kean said the NSW Government had secured funding from the Federal Government for his plan to fill the quarry with spoil from the M1 to M2 link.

"We have a once in a generation chance as we build NorthConnex to fill in Hornsby Quarry and create the People's Park in its place like Centennial Park," Mr Kean said.

"I put forward this proposal in October last year and I am delighted the Baird Government's plan for this site has now secured federal funding for the $22 million project.

"Imagine features like a man-made lake, picnic areas, bike tracks, sports fields and tranquil water features and gardens that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

"The quarry is currently an unsightly wasteland that has been a burden on local communities for more than a decade.

"Today's announcement means we will work with Federal Government and Hornsby Council, to remediate the land and fix this mess.

"Developers have been circling wanting to use the site for high rise development but a recreational oasis on the site is a fantastic outcome for our community.

"We will be working with the Hornsby Shire to undertake widespread public consultation to find the best uses for the site.

"The Council will remediate the site and work with RMS to ensure we limit the truck routes in and out of the quarry.

The work is expected to take two years.
