Clarke Road Special School Receive Grant to Build New Playground Equipment

Special needs playground equipment will be built at Hornsby's Clarke Road Special School following a $67,000 grant from the NSW Government.

The special grant was announced by Hornsby MP Matt Kean earlier this month under the Community Building Partnerships program.

Mr Kean handed over the cheque to the school's Principal Diane Robertson and members of the P & C last Wednesday ahead of World Autism Day.

Ms Robertson said the state-of-the-art playground equipment will be a great addition to the school's special needs students.

"We're extremely happy this has been made possible for our students," Ms Robertson said.

"The new softball playground is ideal for autistic students to use."

Clarke Road School's P & C committee first approached Mr Kean for funding last year but narrowly missed the cut-off day for the Community Building Partnerships program.

Mr Kean sought special dispensation to include the school's funding request and the NSW Premier's Cabinet approved the funding early this month.

"I had over $4 million in applications sent to me for the Community Building Partnerships program," Mr Kean said.

"I can't thank of a more worthy cause.

"Working with kids with a disability is a passion of mine and I'm very happy to be able to help Clarke Road School who do an amazing job."

Teachers and students at Clarke Road School have also recently welcomed a new guide dog to their classroom.

The Labrador named "Minty" is believed to be the first "pets as therapy dog" to be introduced to a school in NSW.
