NSW wants National quad bike rating

Nearly two years after a coroner found quad bikes were the number one killer of workers on Australian farms, the NSW government is calling for a national quad bike safety rating system.

Since 2011, 115 people have been killed in quad bike accidents in Australia, with 32 in NSW.

The state government is urging the federal government to introduce a national five-star safety rating system for quad bikes to help reduce the number of injuries and deaths in the state.

"We believe a rating system is the next big step to reducing deaths and injuries from quad bike incidents," Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We have to work together on this issue to ensure we get the best outcome; we want people to be able to work and live on their farms as safely as possible."

The state government called for a stronger national approach to quad bike safety in May after a survey of quad bike use in the workplace found roll bars and helmets were essential in improving safety.
